Lloyd’s Award 2013 presented to Haldor Topsøe

30.09.2013

Dr. Haldor Topsøe has received the Lloyd’s Award 2013 posthumously for his long-standing achievements for the Danish business community. The award was presented at an event hosted by FSR - Danish Auditors in Bella Center, Copenhagen.

“Haldor Topsøe was a man who made a difference – not only for his company and his employees, but for the whole country. In fact I would not hesitate to say for the entire world.” With these words, the Danish Minister for Science, Innovation and Higher Education Morten Østergaard presented the Lloyd’s Award 2013 to Haldor Topsøe at an event held in Bella Center, Copenhagen.

Henrik Topsøe received the award on behalf of his late father and thanked the 150 people who attended the event.

“The fact that Haldor is gone has left a gap – in our family as well as in the company. This is only natural since he was the person who served as a source of inspiration to many. Fortunately, his DNA lives on in our company, and I feel that we are fully prepared to follow in his footsteps,” Henrik Topsøe said in his speech.

Prior to the presentation of the award, Chairman of FSR - Danish Auditors Morten Speitzer took the rostrum. He stressed that Haldor Topsøe is a source of inspiration for young entrepreneurs and represents a beacon in Danish industry.

“Separately and together, Haldor Topsøe, the man, and Haldor Topsøe, the company, represent progress and everything we would like to be associated with in Denmark. Innovation, technology, research, design and engineering science at the very highest level. It is beyond doubt that Haldor Topsøe has been, and will continue to be a great source of inspiration for the young generations and an example to follow for all of us,” Morten Speitzer said.

The award and the honor were accompanied by a check of DKK 35,000, which Henrik Topsøe immediately donated to Børnesagens Fællesråd, an umbrella organization for children’s charities. The donation was a specific wish by his father, who was informed that he had been appointed to receive the prize shortly before his death.

In their citation, FSR - Danish Auditors said that “Haldor Topsøe is an exemplary icon for many entrepreneurs. With his indomitable will and professionalism, Haldor Topsøe has created a business, and at the age of 99 been the principal leader of the company.”

“Haldor Topsøe’s words ‘From science to business’ still summarize the company’s business foundation: A fundamental understanding of catalytic processes forms the basis of the company’s products and continued development. With an increasing global focus on energy and environment, Haldor Topsøe A/S’ technologies play a significant role, for instance in cleaning flue gasses from power plants, nitrogen reduction in the transport sector, and in the treatment of waste products in the chemical industry.”

Previous winners of the Lloyd Award include: Lars Larsen (JYSK), Stine Bosse (Tryg), Alfred Josefsen (Irma), Jens Moberg (BetterPlace), and Dorte Fals (DR). The award is accompanied by a check of DKK 35,000 from Lloyd’s of London.
